If you qualified outside the UK, the usual route to a licence is PLAB, which the GMC has said is being aligned with the UKMLA. Your exact route depends on your qualification, so start with the GMC’s own checks.
The route in six steps
- Check your eligibility on the GMC website. Some qualifications and experience can use other routes.
- Create a GMC online account and read what the GMC needs from you.
- Show your English language ability by the accepted route. Check the current accepted tests and scores before you book anything.
- Have your primary medical qualification verified through the GMC’s process, which can take time. Start early.
- Pass PLAB 1 and PLAB 2 (or use another route if you qualify). Both are built on the UKMLA content map.
- Apply for registration with a licence to practise, then look for jobs and sort your visa.
Costs to plan for
- PLAB 1: £283. PLAB 2: £1,036 (from 1 April 2026).
- English tests, verification, registration, travel, accommodation for PLAB 2, and visa costs are on top. See how much the UKMLA costs.
