Layers of protection over your work.
  • Doctors in the UK must have adequate indemnity for their work. For NHS employment, your employer usually covers NHS work.
  • Many doctors also join a defence organisation for advice and for work outside the NHS.
  • Check what each layer covers, and tell your provider if your work changes.

Questions to ask

  • What does my employer’s cover include and exclude?
  • What extra cover do I need for locum or private work?
  • How do I report an incident or complaint?

Your checklist

  • Know who covers my NHS work
