A payslip: pay in, deductions out (illustrative, not real figures).
  • Resident doctors’ pay is set nationally in pay scales with extra for nights, weekends and some duties. Check the current scales from NHS Employers or the BMA.
  • Tax and National Insurance are taken through PAYE.
  • You are usually auto-enrolled in the NHS Pension Scheme: you can read the rules before opting out.
  • Student loan repayments, if you have a loan, also come out of pay once you earn above the threshold.

Check your payslip

  • Check the pay point, tax code and any supplements each month.
  • Report errors to payroll quickly, with evidence.
  • Keep payslips and contract documents safe.

Your checklist

  • Checked my tax code
